Can You Hang Canvas Art in a Bathroom?

Yes, with a few precautions. A canvas can live happily in a bathroom if the room dries out quickly after a shower and the canvas stays out of the splash zone.
What steam really does
A canvas and its wooden stretcher are organic materials, and organic materials react to damp. The Canadian Conservation Institute, which advises Canada's museums, puts it simply: damp causes mould.1
What matters is not one hot shower, but how long the air stays wet. Mould needs time, and the wetter the air, the less time it needs.1
The good news is in the last line. A bathroom that is steamy for twenty minutes and then dries out is a very different place from one that stays damp all day. The Institute's first advice is always to deal with the source of moisture.1
Five simple rules
Ventilate. Run the fan or open the window during and after every shower, long enough for the mirror to clear.
Stay out of the splash zone. Never above the bathtub or beside the shower. Choose the driest wall, ideally opposite the bath or near the door.
Mind the height. In a bathroom, as elsewhere, the center of the canvas looks best near eye level, which also keeps it away from splashes from the sink.
Leave it room to breathe. Don't press it against a cold outside wall, where condensation forms.
Check the back once a season. Any musty smell or spots on the stretcher mean the room is too damp for it.

The easiest room of all
A powder room, with a sink but no shower, is the safest bathroom for art. There is no steam, and guests spend a quiet minute looking at the walls.
It is also the perfect place for a bolder piece than you would dare in a living room: a small room can carry a big personality.
What to hang
Water, palms, shells and soft coastal light are natural choices, but a bathroom doesn't have to be literal. A quiet abstract or a misty landscape can turn it into a small retreat.
